The shire horse is known to be an extremely kind animal. So, if you consider keeping it as a pet, it would be good. However, before that, it is important to know its lifespan.

This way, you will be able to provide the best diet and health care throughout their life to keep them happy and healthy. On the other hand, their lifespan is determined by their diet, health care, workload, and environment.

In this article, we look into the lifespan of a shire horse.

What is the Lifespan of a Shire Horse?

The lifespan of a shire horse is between 35-45 years, so if you desire to get one as a pet, be ready for a long-term commitment.

How to Ensure Your Shire Horse Lives Longer

1. Take Care of Their Teeth

It is important to have your shire horse’s teeth checked regularly. If your horse’s teeth are bad, he will not be able to eat properly, meaning he will not take sufficient nutrients to support his vital organs. Also, ensure your Shire’s teeth are floated at least once yearly to remove sharp edges at the corner.

2. Watch Your Shire’s Weight

If you want your shire horse to live happier and longer, do not allow him to add weight. Feed your horse a diet that will not cause weight gain. Just like in humans, obesity causes cardiac problems, which are very deadly.

Furthermore, excess weight can strain your horse’s joints and bones, leading to chronic bone diseases and arthritis. Talk to your vet to explain to you the ideal weight for your shire, and if his weight goes beyond that, adjust his diet.

3. Watch His Diet

Nutrition is an important factor in the lifespan of your shire horse.

Your shire horse is at risk of illnesses and other digestive problems without a proper diet. However, you should note that underfeeding your shire might lead to malnutrition, and overfeeding might lead to obesity, so it’s important to watch his diet.

Ensure you feed your shire good quality food to get the required nutrients he needs like proteins, vitamins, minerals, and fats. Although their diet requirements might change with age, feeding them appropriately at each stage might positively impact their lifespan.

Furthermore, ensure your horse is accessible to clean water. Remember, hydration is also essential for the overall health of your horse.

4. Living Environment

Another factor determining a shire horse’s longevity is the living condition. Their living environment should have proper ventilation, as poor ventilation can lead to colic and affect their lungs.

So, if you have a stall for your horse, ensure it is well-ventilated and should be big enough to sleep comfortably.

If your horse cannot sleep comfortably, it can fall into a deep sleep while standing, and it can collapse and get severe injuries.

In addition, the living environment for your horse should be dry and sheltered. Wet grounds might cause hoof rot. Ensure your horse’s stall is sheltered to protect them from harsh sun rays.

5. Veterinary Care

Your shire horse needs regular veterinary care, which can make them live longer. Shire horses suffer from different illnesses and need adequate medical attention.

Your horse might need timely deworming and vaccinations against strangles, tetanus, equine rabies, west Nile virus, rotavirus, and equine influenza, among others.

6. Ensure They Get Enough Rest

Although shire horses are active, they need rest. Since they perform hard tasks such as plowing, pulling, and riding, they at least need time to rest each day. However, their rest will depend on their age, condition, and workload.

To have a healthy and active horse that will live for a long time, you must balance its rest and daily activities.

7. Ensure Their Hoof Care

Good hoof maintenance can increase the lifespan of your horse. Poor hoof care can cause lameness leading to the decline of your shire’s overall health. You can take your horse to a Farrier for regular check-ups or check the hoof yourself.

However, ensure regular hoof maintenance for at least every six weeks. Note that an unshod horse requires a more hoof routine hoof examination.

8. Keep Your Horse Social

Ensure your shire horse socializes with other animals, as this will help with their emotional and mental well-being, which can help increase their lifespan.

Horses love it when they are in a herd, so don’t limit your horse’s social life. If you have one shire, you can let it interact with a horse across the fence.

Summary

Shire horses have a long lifespan of 35-45 years. However, just because they have that long lifespan does not always mean they will reach that age. But they can live longer if they get quality veterinary care, a good diet, a good living environment, dental care, and adequate sleep and rest.
